I\'m with George. Being an introvert is not the same as shyness.

I\'m an observer myself. I have to get a feel of the situation in order to decide if I want to be there and/or contribute. Watching people and human behavior absolutely fascinates me, but on a psych level, not necessarily an interactive one. Just because I don\'t launch myself into a conversation does not necessarily mean that I\'m shy... I might just think this isn\'t my scene and one of two things happen -- either I stick around (and wish for popcorn in my head to compliment the drama unfolding) or I get the heck out, deciding I want nothing to do with it.

Introverts are sorely misunderstood. Just because we\'re quiet, doesn\'t mean we\'re shy. Just misunderstood.

I hope these pointers help out the young\'un extroverts out there. If you\'re an introvert, you just need to feel secure with yourself. You\'re differently wired. Accept it and find coping mechanisms that work. We\'re the minority. Welcome that =)

I found this helpful, but I seem to have a different issue. I tend to be quiet around people I don't know well, but I'm an observer. I am constantly watching people and human emotion/action really inspires me. But, for instance, when someone new is hired at my work I always introduce myself right away, but it takes me a few shifts with them to actually open up. And sometimes it takes longer, but I'm not sure if this really a problem I can get around... I seem to have a hard exterior that can't be penetrated easily... especially since I've let my guard down before and have been stolen from (very unpleasant feeling :P).

...I sorta wish it was okay again to be shy or reclusive. In the Victorian age recluses got respect and no one tried to 'pull them out of their shell,' or worse yet medicate them.

You have some nice helpful hints here, but sometimes introversion is just a part of a person and there is nothing wrong with that.

Great piece. It really sound so easy but I agree with Steve. It is never easy. But it is also not easy to be shy. So the best option is to get rid of shyness. You just have to try it or else, you get stuck with that uncomfortable feeling of shyness.

Thanks man. I'm a pretty introverted person but I strive to get out of that. I'm into public speaking and introducing myself to new people, but deep down my heart is racing and I get very uneasy. Your 7 ways have helped some and I would love to read more on how to get out of this.

This all sounds so easy here, but is so hard (if not impossible for some, like me) to put into practice... it\'s very very hard to make any changes at all when you\'re constantly out of step with people around you.

God bless those that can actually pull it off.
