Dr. Milton Erickson

The ability to talk to someone in a certain way in order to receive the results that you desire is known as conversational hypnosis.  It is considered to be hypnotic because the person you are speaking with agrees with you completely.  There is no brainwashing involved, or hypnotizing the other person without them realizing.  Instead, you are learning how to speak with someone in a persuasive way, utilizing your tone, hand gestures, and your choice of words in order to make the other person believe you are right.

In the 1950s, the American Medical Association required that all doctors veer away from using hypnosis, despite all of the amazing healing factors involved with hypnosis.  There was one doctor in particular who refused to give up on the idea of using this form of treatment, especially with the results that he had encountered.  Dr. Milton Erickson was quickly ordered to face a hearing, and he was informed that he would lose his medical license in the process.

After learning that the president of the Medical Association lived in Los Angeles, California, he decided that the only way to keep this from happening was to be on the same flight to the hearing as the president.  When he sat down next to the president and another board member from the association on the plane, there was a bit of hostility at first.  By the time the plane landed, all three of them had become good friends.  Not only were the charges dropped against the doctor, but the Medical Association decided to also drop the ban on the use of hypnosis in all medical practices.

The use of conversational hypnosis is different from a regular hypnosis session.  There is no formal introduction into the hypnotic state.  The hypnotist uses no watch to swing in front of the person and there is no countdown into a deep state of relaxation.  Instead, the process is much more subtle.  The technique is more of a persuasion method, and the results can be startling.  The ability to cause your family, friends, co-workers, or even strangers to completely agree with you is a great asset.

The technique is simple.  You use a mixture of specific timing of the voice, language patterns, and different tones to help persuade your listener that what you are saying is completely right.  Not only will your listener believe every thing that you say, but they will have all attention on you.  Your respect level will be raised, and your self confidence is also boosted as well.

Many who do not believe in hypnosis question if the technique that Dr. Milton Erickson formed is ethical.  The truth is that you will be doing nothing any different than trying to sell a product to a customer, asking your spouse to go to a special event with you, or asking a friend for help in a certain situation.  If there is no brainwashing involved, and you are not placing your listener in a deep state of mind, then where is the unethical notion in that?
